Suspension noise! Agh!

Postby MinkelR » September 15th, 2013, 6:59 am

I've recently started getting an odd creaking noise from my front left wheel. It happens when I turn the wheel while the car is still and also under braking. Started happening after a rain storm so initially I thought the bushings were just wet. However it had been hot and dry for the past few days and it is still there. Now I think the ball joint may be failing since there is also a clunk that happens when I hit bumps in the road.
Within the past 10000 miles I've replaced the bushings with polyurethane bushings as well as both radius arms. Going to tear into it tomorrow to take a look. Any thoughts?

Think you're on track with this. Might suggest the top hats in the fender and make sure the pinch bolt on the knuckle strut is tight or not stripped. There's a little slop in the recessed part of the strut to allow a minor squeak/clunk. Good luck and try to avoid lightning strikes. lol. ;) .

Good news! Ball joint is good. Turns out the 24mm nut for the radius arm had backed off about a quarter inch. I guess I should stay off those washboard gravel roads

Don't make the teggie all sad by staying off the roads it loves. 8-) It's just asking for your pit crew to be more diligent! Glad you fixed it!
