Rebuilt steering racks leaking into flexible boots

Postby trent » January 16th, 2015, 4:51 am

I've had a hard time finding a rebuilt steering rack that isn't bad in some way. Three have leaked into the boots on the ends. Two of the leaking racks came with red ATF fluid inside. Does ATF quickly destroy the seals?

Once I used an aftermarket drive shaft oil seal that leaked immediately after installing. When I replaced it with a Honda oil seal, it never leaked after that. Are aftermarket seals in the rebuilt steering racks leaking right away?

What do I need to do to get a leak-free steering rack?

i know autozone and other parts stores sell rebuild kits pretty cheap. mine is leaking aswell. was gonna do it while i had the motor out but i ran out of time.

on another note alot of guys bypass the power steering convert it to manual on the s12s using their oem racks. i have to do this on my s12 due to my motor swap. im pretty sure the procees is the same on most ps racks. im going to try it on my teg when i can. as light as these cars are power steering isnt really needed(iv drove mine over a year with out it hooked up, bc i couldnt find the right belt, autozone and adavance both sold me ac belt for ps belt). anyhow itll free up alittle weight and load on the motor(less rotation mass, rev alittle faster excexc)
