estimating 27 ft-lb torque for power steering pressure line nut

Postby trent » August 30th, 2017, 12:58 am

The torque specification for the power steering pump pressure hose fitting with a 14mm nut at the steering rack is 27 ft-lb. I don't have a torque wrench that will fit on fluid line fittings. Instead I put a 12 point socket on my 3/8 inch drive torque wrench handle and felt the arm strength needed to give 27 ft-lbs with the same length socket handle as my fluid line wrench. I then tried to repeat the same arm pressure while tightening the fitting. That stopped the leak I always seem to get after installing a new steering rack.

I know the pump pressure line fitting was leaking because i wrapped strips of disposable paper rags around each of the three fittings, and only the one around the pressure line fitting was soaked with fluid.

The other two line fittings with 17mm and 12mm nuts at the steering rack have torque specs of 21 and 9 ft-lbs.

Correctly torque all those fluid line fittings.
