Doesn't like to start when warm

Postby Teggyda3 » June 6th, 2017, 2:17 am

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here. I've got a 87 LS with 178k on the clock and this problem has been getting a little worse lately so I figured I'd ask you all. From a cold start, my car starts up every time with absolutely no problems. The problem is when I've been driving it hard or the car is hot when I park it and start it up shortly after. Typically around 10 to 30 minutes after parked. The car will crank and start as normal, then it will stumble and die about 5 to 10 seconds after. It will do this a few times before starting and staying on and it's completely fine after that. It never dies after it stays on for about 20 seconds. Before I start the car I always wait for the fuel pump to prime and sometimes after it dies I'll take the key out and switch the ignition to the on position and the PGM-FI light will not come on and the fuel pump will not prime. I'm thinking it's most likely a fuel systems problem seeing as I have pretty much all new electrical in the car. One of my buddies says it could be a fuel main but I'd rather not throw parts at it left and right as I am short on cash at the moment. What do you guys think? Thanks everyone

Sounds more like a faulty main fuel relay located under the dash. The relay is inside a black case but is orange/red colored when you remove it. It is the furthest forward relay in the group that is straight above the clutch/brake pedals. Best way to get it out is to pry the ends of the black housing apart and use the connector and wires to wiggle it out. Look closely and you'll see the solder areas are discolored and cracked.

Thanks, that ended up being the problem. I ended up taking it out then just re-soldering the cracked connections now it works like a charm!
