My 89 LS... (A Build Journal)

Postby john89teg » June 4th, 2014, 7:13 pm

I'm starting a build on a 89 ls that was destined for scrap. I had one hell of a time getting her home. It started at about 9pm last Friday night after my buddy got off work. We drove out to Whitney (about 90 mins from where I live) in his truck. By the time we were on the way back with the teg on the towbar, it was almost 1am. The car was buried in mud, and on 4 flats. Driving back we had to turn at the courthouse in Hillsboro. The truck turned, but the teg decided to keep going straight, shearing off the tow brackets and almost clipping a hill county sheriff's cruiser. The car came to rest embedded in a low pipe fence. After having tags and licenses ran on both cars (and a rather stern talking to) we only got a verbal warning. We pulled the car off the fence using the truck, and parked it. By the time we got home it was 3:45am. Since I had to be up at 5:30, no sleep for me. I worked til 6pm, and we tried again to get the car (uhaul tow dolly this time). No problems thus time! Here she is as we were kicking out of Hillsboro:

Lessons learned so far:
1. Hillsboro cops and Hill Co. Sheriffs are awesome!
2. Use a damned tow dolly instead of a tow bar!

I picked up a factory tape deck, short shifter, and an antenna from the junkyard Monday. I spent today getting everything installed.

I went to U Pull It in Grand Prairie today, and found both an 86-87 LS and an 88-89 LS. I pulled a generic strut tower bar, all the lighting I needed, and a driver's seat. Here is how she sits right now:

Keep it up, it makes me happy to see another teg getting back on the road.

Well, after replacing a faulty ignition switch, I found the main relay was shot. I replaced that to find the pump wasn't running. I went ahead and replaced the pump, fought priming the fuel system, but she runs now (albeit kinda roughly).

While cleaning up the engine bay, I found the source of the nasty metallic thumping noise. Here is the culprit: A 'slightly worn' a/c tensioner pulley.

Honestly, I'm just happy to have another project car again. Being able to tinker with the car helps me unwind and keep sane.

Yeah, but at least it's an easy fix. On a related note, I'm needing to retrofit the car for r134. Does anyone on here know where I can find the parts that I need?

R134 is kind of a mixed bag of results with these compressors.
The Nippon Denso compressor is one where it is explicitly stated not to use R134
Sometimes it works out perfectly, sometimes not. I personally have seen and dealt with retrofits that just don't work out well with many of these compressors made for 1980s Honda vehicles. It will work but it seems to put way too much stress when in use, screws with the idle, and shortens the life of the compressor.

If possible just stick with R12. I was able to get it from local refrigeration and commercial AC shops no problem.
The R12 substitutes like Freeze 12 or ES-12 also work well but they could be dangerous as they are propane based. Just have to make sure you absolutely have no leaks if you use any of those products.

Out with the old injectors...

... and in with the new! (Well, remans at least)

Eventually, I'm going to send the factory injectors (and three other by sets) to RC to be rebuilt and flow matched.

Okay, so...

1. Engine Mechanical timing was spot on.
2. fresh plugs were naaaaasssty (gas buildup)
3. Firing order is correct

Checked the distributor out of curiosity,

Spec is like 8.4-9.2 ohms from terminal A to the HT terminal
I got 1.372K ohms

(Well there's your problem :D ) Anyone got a spare Blacktop coil? If not, I'll just get a reman distributor from rockauto.

That intake, what's it called? Just a aftermarket filter over the intake? I thought you needed a stainless steel pipe to go along with it? I have a 1st gen teg that looks exactly like this. 89 as well. I'm trying to mod it out in a cheap manner, doing small stuff like this is necessary so reading these posts are helpful. But I want to put a short ram intake on. Is that what in seeing on your car?
This is my first car ever so I'm learning as I go.
