Okay so now I'm about to do a B16 swap into the Gen 1.
Ive done an LS Vtec build into the Gen 2 I've got, swapped lots of engines in the past in other cars (mostly Hondas) so I'm confident on the ability to make it work.

Below is when I ordered my first bit of stuff for this swap -

Re: What did you do to your teg today?
Postby d16a3teg » August 21st, 2014, 8:50 am

I ordered my mounts for a B16a swap into the integra today - wish me luck!
Vacuum advance to vtec woohoo should be fun - a 6 month project begins with the first purchase......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The list of items collected for the swap -

B16a2 engine (assembled head and block including alternator)
Innovative engine mount kit
Knock sensor
NGK iridium sparkplugs
Ebay stainless steel extractors
Inlet manifold 5mm spacer
Aluminium crankshaft pulley with alternator drive only

Gearbox -
B16a gearbox,
LS 5th gearswap,
LSD from D16a3 gearbox to be swapped over

Wiring -
VSS from a 89 Model Legend.

Will get some photos in the coming few days as its pieced together.

Started to unplug engine tonight as well -

Disconnected -
fuel lines
radiator
radiator hoses
removed radiator
engine loom
vacuum control box
battery
starter cable
earth cables
brake calipers
struts
gear selector and reaction rod
exhaust

Drained all oils

So should be closer to lifting out the drivetrain later this week.

Get a new clutch friction plate today and cleaned the outside of the box after reassembly - feels like all the gears are working nicely.

Next is to button up the gearbox to the engine and start on the wiring swap across - I've got the D16 loom to use and also the bits and pieces from a couple of b16/b18 engines so should be able to get this done in the coming few weeks........also have figured out the VSS as per posts above.

Will put up some more photos soon.
Have made a vtec subharness with knock sensor, vtec pressure and vtec solenoid.
Earthed the solenoid as well.
Made up another harness for my other 3 wires from the distributor - CKP 1 & 2 plus Ignitor going from vaccum advance so needed to do this.
Depinned an old PG7 ecu connectors and will put these on the ends of my subharnesses.

Still to do
VSS
ECU repinning and new connector
Mount engine back in car
Driveshafts

Seems like a long list :)

Had a friend over to help with the install. Got it into the car and need to change the rear t bracket to the civic one, one I had is totally wrong :(

Also needed to do the clearance for alternator pulley - heat torch and air hammer made some short work of the reshaping.

Got the harness all pretty looking and run through the firewall into the cabin, still need to shorten and do the connectors into the ECU

And so the story continues......

Image

Frame Rail dented in

Image

The different lengths of the B16 shaft and the D16 shaft. The B16 measures in at 400mm whilst the D shaft is a nice 370mm. With a trial fit the B16 shaft was pushing the linkage outboard about 40mm so if I can somehow reuse the D intermediate shaft, I think I can get away without using any aftermarket drive shafts.

So spending some time searching and thinking has lead to the below diagrams using AutoCAD - these are in a 1:1 format so can easily print on paper cut out and trial fit to see if the design works.

Turns out this was all way too complicated.

Image

And have finalised on a simpler mounting plate. Turns out the d shaft bracket sits at nearly the centreline of the bearing whilst the b series intermediate is offset to the bearing centreline - why is this important?
Because if I get a 12mm plate made that will allow me to reuse the original bolt holes on the block and then with a small amount of modification to the d intermediate shaft - cut and redrill a hole, the D intermediate will then sit back at the correct angle and spacing from the block.

Have drawn this up and made a cardboard template which appears to work.

Have sent it out to be made from 12mm mild steel, laser cut and drilled and tapped where needed.
Will post up photos once its been made.

Ordered new radiator hoses as well and am on the hunt for a rear T bracket from a 99 Si Civic.

Update for today - have through the generosity of one of my other friends scored a rear engine bracket to suit the swap.
Radiator hoses and NGK ignition wires are on their way.

So should have the adapter plate later this week and then can fit the drivetrain assembly into place.

Then hook into the re-pinning and wiring changes to make it start and run.....

Thanks thebranded.

And here now is the latest installment.......

Image

So have lifted the new one into place, left the rear cross member mount off to make it easier to line up. After a fair bit of tackling got the gearbox mount and the pulley end to line up. Problem was with the back of the engine (inlet manifold) it needed a lot of forward rotation to allow the rear mount to fit in and line up.

Image

Image

And now the interesting bit - the driveshafts- I've modded the intermediate shaft to allow clearance for the adaptor plate to use the original block mounting holes hence the need to cut and slot out.

Have also drilled a 3rd new hole as well into the bracket after shortening to allow clearance for the oil pressure switch and filter.

Image

Image

Anyway next is awaiting the arrival of my adaptor plate - should be ready Monday next week.

Total cost of the plate will be approx $60 AUD so much cheaper than some custom driveshafts!!! Hey if it works might even get a couple more made up for others if interested.

Still need to do exhaust; selector shafts; radiator; wiring and fuel line as the AUD Integra has the fuel filter on the passenger side (left) and the fuel rail is opening on the rhs - so need an extension to the fuel line......

And now the latest installment -

Image

The gap from original position to the new position - not much really and the driveshafts are back in the original spots with a slight angle to the rear of the car. Adaptor plate is ready for collection - will post some photos of the item before and after.

Image

Selector shaft lengthened - threaded rod is being used to allow adjustment for final sizing then will pull out and finish weld or get another selector set and cut and shut together with this one.

Image

Gap between headers and the original exhaust - will make up a temporary pipe to get me to the muffler shop

Latest stats - have done an initial start and stop.
It fired on cylinder 4 only - was not happy!
Checked plugs - 4 sooty and 1 2 3 all clean - swapped in another set of injectors and away it went.
2 error codes - 9 and 14 CYP is 9 and IACV is 14

Checked wiring on IACV and had one end to ground - needed to be to main relay ignition switched. Fixed that up and down to 9 code. Will swap in the dissy from my LSVTEC and see if code goes away.
Re did fuel line with a neater tuck job and have battery tray to redo and exhaust to match up.
Adaptor plate works a treat and I am using desires driveshafts now - no custom ones to worry about getting manufactured.

Am nearing the end - will post some more photos soon

LS disy ran code 9 so have gone back over C1 and C2 wires - swapped them round and code 9 gone. Now have a code 5 left - MAP sensor so need to check for vaccum leaks.

Exhaust last major thing to do and need to take to a shop. Will then work through neatening it all up over the coming days/weeks/months.

Code 5 problem resolved ! 5 minute fix - had the number 21 vacuum hose going to the wrong point on the throttle body - swapped this and cleared the code.

Started the car and nice nice nice! No codes and a pretty good warm up sequence - next is to put the wheels back on and find the registration papers and take it for a drive around the block.

On the exhaust Have made up a backyard connection pipe and wrapped it all up in aluminium foil to quieten it down and this will work to get me to the exhaust shop.

Will get some more photos up in the coming week.

Latest update
Ran car around the block and got a VSS error code. Did the test and found that the VSS was not working.
Pulled the dash cluster out and checked the VSS pulser directly – no change in resistance as the speedo turned – FSM says faulty VSS. Checked on Red pepper racing and they recommend to move the VSS pulser out of the casing and place between the copper disc and the speedo spring to ensure good signalling from the VSS. Did this in a test and yep improved the signal.
Went to solder into place and broke the VSS – world of pain!

At first I thought this was a Hall Effect Sensor – the variable magnetic field inducing a voltage in the windings on the opposite side and the removal of the magnetic field triggering a collapse of the polarity change hence triggering the signal output. There are a couple of different Hall Effect sensors out there that have ratiometric outputs and I think this is what is in the later model cars with the 3 wire versions on the gearbox – input 12v earth and an output voltage seen by the ECU/ECM. Variable output is then referenced to a table in the ROM and used with the other input sensors to determine correct map and settings for injection etc.

“The Hall effect is the production of a voltage difference (the Hall voltage) across an electrical conductor, transverse to an electric current in the conductor and a magnetic field perpendicular to the current”

After a few searches and reading further the VSS in these cars is nothing more than a normally open (NO) reed switch. The pulsing is caused by the 4 magnets located in the speedo hub pulling the contacts together completing the circuit to earth the 5V output from the ECU. So the ECU is looking for the drop in voltage on the B16 pin out. Went to the local electronics supplier Jaycar and picked up part number SM1002 – grand cost of $1.95 so I grabbed 3 of them just incase I broke another one.

After fitting to the speedo cluster and checking all good on 4 earths per revolution proceeded to fit back into the dash.

Have now since this point taken the car for a drive to and from work around 120km round trip and a few shots around the block and no error codes, VTEC cuts in at ~5200 rpm and the car feels and drives like a standard car but seems to be pretty quick, seat of the pants would say 10-15% quicker than with the other modified engine (1mm oversize pistons, decked block, decked head and worked camshafts - very lumpy at idle)

Rough costings excluding the B16a -
Mounts $380;
adaptor plate $60 (my design);
T bracket at the back (definitely need this from the 99 Si Civic) $140 (expensive shop around on this one!);
Fuel line $35
Extractors and exhaust mods $300
New knock sensor $85 (rockauto)
Radiator hose $30
VSS - reed switch $1.95

Total about $1035

Miscellaneous other stuff - free as I went through the piles of parts (aka junk)

Timing wise - now I've done it I reckon that it would take about 25-40 hours all up. I know the build took longer however there was development time in the adaptor plate and getting that to work plus also the mods to chassis rail and awaiting the lower radiator hose. Also the VSS development.

I also did the synchros in the gearbox and the LS 5th gear so would recommend the LS 5th gear idea. And fitted a new clutch plate.

I'd recommend building the different wire harnesses first and fit to the engine prior to placing in the engine bay.
The biggest delay was waiting on parts to turn up and also the sorting out of the vacuum advance to electronic advance.

PM me if you need any other info or as you're local can give you a ph number if easier.

Unfortunately I believe NSW club plates are limited to cars over 30, where ours is 25. It's already hard to get bits to save an interesting & worthy car at 25 but @ 30.... Pity about the South Aust. schemes pre 1979! requirements.

Might need to get more details about VSS if I try to fit '88 CRX D16A8 head & upgrade distributor/electronics to my scrap Integra..

So have since taken the car to one of the local tracks - Sandown and run it through 6 x 15 minute sessions. The engine seems good, with a couple of minor problems surfacing whilst doing this.

Lost 2 of the 3 bolts that hold the distributor in place - so have replaced and tightened them with crush washers underneath, also dropped a bolt out of the intermediate shaft - have replaced and used lock tight on the threads now.
Tore a driveshaft boot as well - so really just a couple of minor items.

Performance wise 2 seconds slower than my best time with the other engine in place, however it was a shake down event for me. Also the temperature on the day was 35-38c degree the car and engine went well. The VSS tripped out at the end of each session on the cool down lap so am wondering if Vtec was engaging at all. Will look to wire in a dash mounted LED to let me know when the Vtec is in use.

Might want to resolder the VSS circuit board as it's a known fault with it.
