Front Axle shaft right grease leak - not the CV boot?

Postby ms2000 » July 1st, 2015, 8:53 pm

I saw the grease on the front axle - grease looks clean - CV boots are fine and they are relatively new.

What is this "Axle shaft right" - how critical is it - can they be repaired - should I take it to a specialty shop so they might be able to fix this?
I never had to repair this - so it must be the original.

Is it safe to drive on the freeway?

Unless the axle click loudly on tight slow turns, you should be fine. If it does click, the internals are worn. Don't mess with fixing the inner or outer assys. Just get a NEW axle. I say new because they're only around $70 each warranteed and the re-manufacturers will sometimes grind the seal groove that wears in on the inner differential shaft part therefore causing the differential to leak because the shaft is now smaller than the seal.

Where do you buy the new axle for that price - who makes these new ones?

Napa is where I get mine. Don't want to waste time with O'Reillys or Autozone. They've made me wait two days to have an opened box with a used return axle in it, not in a plastic bag either. Make sure you grab the ends and ariculate the shaft to verify there's no binding or looseness. Needs to be snug and movable in all directions.
