Oil pan gasket - how frequently change?

Postby ms2000 » July 1st, 2015, 5:59 pm

Firestone tells me that the oil pan gasket is leaking - I could not get a 2nd opinion.
How often you guys had to change this?

I never had to replace the oil pan gasket since 1999 when I got this car - during this time I put only 70k miles.
Is this likely happening?

Pan gaskets usually start this around 200K. I would say to get a second opinion as I don't trust
Firestone one bit. This is the third time I've heard of them scaring folks. Both times it was them that didn't change out the drain seal washer. Cheap way for them to make a couple hundred. Besides, it's easily done in an hour and you get to check everything else out while under there.

You'll need to remove the metal splash shield, drop the exhaust from the header (you'll probably have trouble with the nuts there. get new ones) remove the odd looking weight that's attached to the engine block in the front and one trans bolt, then the clutch splash guard. Then it's a process of cleaning stuff up. make a morning of it and enjoy your labors.

Thanks @evtsteward

Do you expect to see metals in the pan - what is the significance?

S/B no metal. If magnetic it's not the bearings. If finely ground magnetic that's engine wear. Chunks? Look the block parts over carefully.
