Ask A Detailer - Detailing Q&A Thread - Post questions here!

Postby Dan » April 1st, 2017, 7:02 pm

Hello! Ami and I attended Autogeek's Detail Fest last month. We attended seminars taught by industry pros, learned about new products coming onto the market, got to try out some of the latest and greatest, and had a wonderful time. (Photo album: http://imgur.com/a/fLxYd)

I got into detailing as a hobby around the time I started driving--around 2000 or 2001. I've been detailing professionally as a side gig since around 2008. Both Ami and I have developed a lot of knowledge, skills and experience, and would like to extend that to the G1Teg community.

This year, Ami and I are going big. We're completely reimagining my former side gig and opening a proper detailing business. We will be offering a wide variety of premium and speciality detailing services -- including exterior and interior detailing, deep cleaning, paint correction, ceramic coatings, hazmat and biohazard containment and cleanup, and much more.

I'll be posting some write-ups, tips and other stuff along the way, too.

So, don't be shy. If you have any questions about detailing, please feel free to ask them in this thread.

:D

I'm assuming you guys detail the interior as well?
Do you know anything about detailing/restoring plastic and leather trim that has cuts/scrapes everywhere from wear and tear?

Of course! While I don't necessarily prefer contorting myself into the wild yoga poses required to do so , I've figured out a few things over the years.

It really depends what we're looking at in terms of repair. If it's a hard plastic trim panel with some gauges and scrapes, a heat gun combined with a sponge or towel with a similar texture to the surface works wonders to smooth it out and minimize the appearance of the scrapes.

Do you have pictures?

Yes, normal wear and tear on the plastic pieces in the trunk. Image

Oh yeah.

Those can be improved, but it'll be difficult to get them fully out. You'll need a heat gun, 32oz spray bottle with some distilled water and 1/2oz of car wash soap, and a regular old kitchen sponge (NOT the scrubber type, but the regular type).

- With the heat gun on low, warm up the plastic until it's softened a bit.
- Spray some of the soapy solution onto the sponge and dab away at the panel. Don't wipe more than 1/2 inch in any direction or you'll introduce lines into the plastic. This will even out the scrapes and scratches a bit.

This won't make it perfect, but it'll minimize the scuffs and improve the appearance of the panel, at the very least. The deep gouges won't be able to be fixed without severely altering the appearance of the panel itself.

Hope this helps!
